Halifax Tides FC and Ottawa Rapid FC made history Monday afternoon at Wanderers Grounds in the first-ever W Canadian Championship match. The two sides played to a 2-2 draw over 90 minutes in their Northern Super League regular-season matchup before going to extra time to determine who would advance in the W Canadian Championship, with Ottawa claiming a 3-2 victory.

The afternoon marked the first-ever W Canadian Championship match and the first time the competition's unique format was put into action in an NSL match between two league clubs. With the regular-season contest ending level, the result counted as a draw in the NSL standings, while the quarter-final continued beyond 90 minutes to determine which team would advance in the W Canadian Championship.

After a scoreless opening half, the Tides came out firing after the break.

Jordyn Rhodes opened the scoring in the 49th minute, receiving a pass from Cho So-Hyun before turning and finding the corner to put Halifax ahead.

Rhodes wasn't finished. Thirteen minutes later, she doubled the Tides' advantage, getting a touch on the ball amid a scramble following a Halifax corner to give the hosts a 2-0 lead and complete her brace.

Ottawa began to claw its way back in the final stages of regulation. Florence Belzile pulled one back in the 83rd minute before Jazmine Wilkinson found the equalizer deep into stoppage time, heading home in the 90+2nd minute to send the NSL contest to a 2-2 finish.

With the league match officially ending in a draw, the teams remained on the pitch for extra time with a spot in the W Canadian Championship semifinals on the line.

Ottawa found the deciding goal in the 107th minute when Nicola Golen finished from close range to put the visitors ahead for the first time.

The Tides pushed forward in search of another equalizer, throwing numbers into the attack as the historic quarter-final entered its final minutes. Despite the late pressure, Ottawa held on to claim a 3-2 extra-time victory and become the first team to advance to the W Canadian Championship semifinals.

While the result ends Halifax's run in the W Canadian Championship competition, the Tides were part of a first for the league. A match that began as an NSL regular-season battle and, after 90 minutes ended level, continued into extra time with a place in a new national competition on the line.
