For International Women’s Day 2026, the theme “Give to Gain” is all about how giving your time, mentorship, and opportunities creates ripple effects that lift others forward.

Courtney Sherlock, co-founder and CEO of Halifax Tides FC, knows this firsthand. What started as cheering on her children during their soccer games quickly turned into building a professional pathway for women’s professional soccer in Atlantic Canada. We talked with her about believing in something before it existed, the power of mentorship, and how giving your time can open doors far beyond what you might imagine.

You came into this role through your children. At what point did it shift from being something you supported to something you felt responsible to build?

In the fall of 2023, I realized that a professional women’s soccer league did not exist in Canada.  Not only that, but there were efforts made to ensure an East Coast team was created with no success. That was the point when I realized that I had the ability to make this team and league a reality and I didn’t need to rely on anyone else to do it.

Building something that didn’t exist, what did you have to believe before there was proof?

I had to believe in myself. I have built several businesses from scratch before so I knew that I could do it. It was as simple as that. If you believe in yourself and know that you will do whatever it takes to get the job done, then you have already won the battle.

When you think about long-term sustainability, what does success look like beyond wins?

That the Halifax Tides FC exists well beyond me and my involvement. This is the idea of legacy. That we have created something that will survive and thrive long into the future.

What’s one way a young girl can give-time, support, or encouragement-that will help her and others grow?

If she has a particular interest or strength in a specific area, then putting up her hand, reaching out and volunteering is the first step. So many companies, organizations, teams, etc are looking for help - especially if it is from a volunteer. Not being afraid to offer support and be willing to show up and do whatever is needing to be done. Any involvement in something that she is passionate about will bring help to others and growth to herself.

When you give opportunities or mentorship, how does that multiply impact across the community?

When I spend time mentoring others, I know that the information and experiences I am sharing will not only help that one person, but it will have an effect on their lives and become a part of their story. Which means that they will share my experiences and mentorship to others who will all do the same. Every time you offer mentorship - or give the gift of your time and experience, it will pay dividends across our communities and our world.

What message would you give to young women about the power of giving as they pursue their dreams?

Many opportunities in life will come to you because of your past relationships and the way that you have interacted with and treated people. If you are a good human, do your best and help others that will pay dividends for you, especially when you have a time in your life when you need to reach out to others and ask for help. Be prepared to give with nothing received in return because it is the right thing to do.
